During the Civil War in the United States, William Sherman was a Union general. He was in charge of sixty thousand soldiers. In November 1864, General Sherman and his soldiers went on a long march called Sherman's March to the Sea. The soldiers started the march in Atlanta, Georgia and marched to Savannah, Georgia, which is near the ocean. Sherman and his soldiers were destructive during the march. They burned down buildings, stole food, and broke into houses. They did this to make the people in the Confederacy want to give up. It worked, and afterward the Confederacy only fought four more months.
