If you were born after 1995, chances are you've never had the chicken pox. In 1995, a vaccine was introduced so that children wouldn't have to suffer through this common ailment. Chicken pox is a very contagious virus that causes blisters to form on the skin. They are extremely itchy and unpleasant. The good thing about the chicken pox is that once you catch it, you will never get it again. However, the virus will occasionally flare up in older people and cause a condition called shingles, which is a rash on one side of the body that is very painful and can take a long time to heal. Chicken pox doesn't usually cause serious side effects in healthy people, but for children and adults who are sick, it can cause serious problems. Today, children don't have to worry about getting chicken pox when they're young or shingles when they're older. The vaccine has a 70 to 90 percent success rate.
