We may think of heroes as people who perform extraordinary deeds under extraordinary conditions. In order for heroes to be recognized in our culture, these deeds must be made public through various types of media. American heroes may include such figures as politicians, major league athletes, actors, or television personalities. We learn about any heroic acts achieved by public figures by watching the news or reading periodicals in which news of the famous is featured. Heroic deeds may be performed without anyone's notice, however. The parent who sacrifices his or her own needs in order to meet the needs of other family members can sometimes be considered a hero. The teacher who gives his or her own time and energy tirelessly in order to ensure student success is no less a hero because he or she receives no public recognition. Everyday heroes deserve our admiration and praise at least as much, and perhaps more, than those whose deeds are on the daily news.
