Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer. He lived from February 15, 1564 to January 8, 1642. He laid the groundwork for what we know as modern experimental science. He was adept in mathematics and physics and is important for stating that the laws of nature are based on mathematics. He is known for technical achievements, such as inventing a telescope that was practical for astronomical use. He made many discoveries with his telescope, including the first four moons of Jupiter. He is also known for his laws of planetary physics. Galileo formulated the ideas of inertia and momentum that would later be used by scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton. He also supported the ideas of Copernicus, which stated that the earth moved around the sun, not vice versa. The Catholic Church disagreed with this idea. Galileo was summoned to Rome and made to take back his beliefs. He lived the rest of his life in seclusion, but he never stopped his scientific investigations.
