Lexile Level: 1270L

Categories: People & Places

When we stereotype, we attribute common characteristics to a group of people without any consideration for the individual. Stereotypes are often negative and can be used to justify prejudice or bias against certain groups, though they can include positive conceptions as well. Regardless of whether they are positive or negative, stereotypes ignore or negate differences between individuals by generalizing and simplifying. They may involve exaggeration or distortion of traits or qualities. Stereotypes assume that all people who are members of a group will behave in predictable ways. Because people who stereotype are guilty of simplistic thinking, it may be possible to provide education that will encourage more critical thinking. It may also be possible to change stereotypes by becoming more familiar with those whose culture is different from our own. As we get to know others as individuals, we learn that each person holds unique qualities and cannot be likened so simply to others in any group.
