George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. Washington was a general during the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War was between the British colonies in America and Britain. The colonies fought to become their own country. Before the war, the colonies had been part of Britain. The colonies won the war, and the United States became a country. Washington was commander-in-chief of the colonial military during the war. He became president in 1789 and served two terms. He left office in 1797. Washington faced many challenges as leader of the army. Many of the men were not well trained. Washington helped to train and organize them. The Revolutionary War ended in 1781. British General Cornwallis surrendered to Washington, and that ended the war. Washington was born in 1732 in Virginia. He died in 1799. Washington, D.C. is named for George Washington. He is now called "the father of the country."
