Maria had wanted a watch for almost as long as she could remember, so when she opened the watch-sized box on her twelfth birthday, she could hardly contain her excitement. It was a real watch with hands that slowly moved around the white face, each hour marked with a shiny gold number. She especially loved the tiny diamond placed at the twelve mark. She knew it was only a diamond chip, but it was real. She could remember listening to the tick of her grandfather's watch when she was small enough to sit on his lap. Her watch made her feel that she was really growing up. Maria wore her watch everywhere, taking it off only to shower. It felt like part of her arm, and she always smiled when she saw how the gold-toned band complemented her skin.
