If you've ever been to the beach, you've probably collected pretty shells from the sand. Shells come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, but did you know that nearly every shell once had an animal living inside of it? There are people who actually collect and study shells. They are called conchologists, and they usually study the animal that lived inside the shell too. Some animals that live in shells are snails, oysters, and clams. Although these shells can be found on sandy beaches, they are also found in mud, sand flats, and underwater reefs. Conchologists often collect shells while snorkeling or scuba diving. They use a tool called a sieve, which helps them separate the shells from the sand, mud, and water. Underwater coral reefs are one of the best places to collect shells, but people must be careful not to damage the reef.
