Although we often view conflict as a negative factor to be avoided whenever possible in our interpersonal relationships, constructive conflict can actually bring growth and beneficial changes to our relationships with family members, friends, classmates, teachers, and anyone with whom we interact regularly. Challenges to our ideas and feelings can make us experience unease and discomfort, especially if they come from people we respect and value. These challenges, however, can provoke shifts in perspective and allow us to examine our thoughts more critically than we might do ordinarily. Relationships can deepen as people examine and clarify their feelings about themselves and each other. It is important for conflict participants to present challenges in a positive and non-threatening manner for growth to occur. Otherwise, the conflict may become destructive to the relationship. As long as those engaged in the conflict respect and value each other, however, constructive conflict can only strengthen the relationship.
