Cell phone use among American teenagers has mushroomed to such an extent that those who do not communicate through wireless technology may feel excluded from social interaction with many of their peers. While a majority of adults consider teen cell phone use rude or inappropriate in some public places, it has become the norm for younger Americans. They feel it necessary to be in constant contact with their network of friends. Ironically, this may isolate them from others in certain situations. While it is possible to take their friends with them wherever they go as long as cell phone service is available, it is much less likely that they will meet or interact with anyone new. In addition, they may not develop social skills necessary to interact with others in new social settings. Though it may be too soon to measure the impact of this phenomenon, the narrowed social focus of many American teenagers is undeniable.
