The college experience represents one of the major commitments of time and money that a person will make in a lifetime. Therefore, it is important to fully arm oneself with as much information as possible when selecting an institution of higher education. Prospective students should understand that most colleges work in much the same way businesses do, and students are the customers that keep the organization going. This means that when a student contacts a college's admissions counselor for information, the admissions counselor is acting not only as a source of information, but also as a salesperson. Prospective students should keep this in mind and filter the information accordingly. Sometimes it can be helpful to communicate with the college's professors or current students to get a picture not tainted by the pressure some admissions counselors have on them to meet quotas.
