There are 925,000 restaurants in the United States. Restaurant sales have increased greatly since 1970. Sales from restaurants reached more than $511 billion in 2006. That's a lot of food! How often does your family eat at a restaurant? There are many different types of restaurants. Some are fancy, and others, like fast food restaurants, are very casual. You don't even have to go inside because most fast food restaurants have drive-through windows. Other restaurants are in the middle, not casual but not fancy. There are many different types of restaurants in America. Many serve foods from other countries such as Thailand, Italy, Mexico, and Ethiopia. There are also places that serve what many call American food, including steaks, French fries, hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, and ice cream. Many restaurants serve a combination of foods from different countries, maybe offering pizza, quesadillas, stir-fry, and hamburgers. Then, there is something for everyone.
