Snow was not common in Sasha's hometown in eastern North Carolina, so it gave her quite a thrill to see the ground blanketed in soft whiteness. She knew if the snow continued to fall for another hour or two the town would shut down. Her parents would not have to go to work the next day, and she and her brother and sister would not have to go to school. As she helped her younger brother, Andrew, roll a large snowball into the base of a snowman, she imagined her entire family together, sipping hot chocolate in front of the fireplace they rarely used. Maybe they would play board games, and perhaps they would sing as her mother played the piano. Maybe they would play charades or cards. As the snow began to fall harder, she felt her visions and hopes becoming more real.
