In 1860, people in the United States did not agree about how to rule the country. Some people did not want to be a part of the United States anymore. These people lived in the South. They told the President of the United States that they were not in the United States anymore. This was called secession. The South made a new country. It was called the Confederate States of America. There were eleven states in this new country. The President did not want the South to be a new country. He wanted it to be in the United States again. The South did not want that. The United States and the Confederate States went to war. It was the Civil War. They fought for four years. The United States won. When the war was over, the South became part of the United States again.
