Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth. It is 29,028 feet tall. This mountain is very difficult to climb. The air near the top has little oxygen, making it hard to breathe. The extreme cold, deep snow, and strong winds are dangerous. One of the first men who tried to climb Mt. Everest was George Mallory. When a reporter asked him why he was going to climb the mountain, Mallory replied, "Because it is there." The first people to reach the top of Mt. Everest were Edmund Hillary, from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay, from Nepal. These two men climbed to the top in 1953. In 2001, Erik Weihenmayer and his team also made it to the top. This was an amazing accomplishment. Erik is blind and had to climb the slippery ice by feeling his way along the trail and listening to instructions from his friends. Erik was the first blind person to climb Mt. Everest.
