The Civil War happened in America. It was when people in America fought each other. There were two sides in the war. One side was the Union. The other side was the Confederacy. The Union's army leader was General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederacy's army leader was General Robert E. Lee. General Lee surrendered to General Grant in Virginia. This meant that General Lee gave up fighting the war. This happened on April 9, 1865. That was the last day of the war. The war was over. The Union had won. The two generals needed to talk. They met in the Appomattox Courthouse. General Grant was nice to General Lee and his soldiers. He let them keep their horses. This was good because the soldiers needed the horses to do work on their farms when they went home. General Grant also let General Lee keep his gun. This meant that he thought General Lee was a good soldier.
