In the United States voting is a right. Voting is also a special duty. In parts of the world, people do not have the right to vote. Any American citizen over the age of eighteen has the right to vote in America. They may vote in national elections. Also they may vote in their state and local elections. These local elections may decide key issues. Sometimes citizens think that their vote is not important. That is not true. In 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were running for the office of president. The race turned out to be very close. John F. Kennedy won. However, if Richard Nixon had had just one more vote in every precinct in the country, he would have won. Local and state elections may also be decided by just a few votes. The mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan was elected by one vote in 1977. Tell everyone you know to vote. It makes a difference.
