Have you ever heard the expression "Necessity is the mother of invention?" Do you know what it means? Throughout human history, people have come up with ideas that improve or simplify the way things are done. Some inventions that we take for granted today include the electric light bulb, indoor plumbing, air conditioning, automobiles, and television. But most of these everyday things would have seemed very strange to someone living a little more than 100 years ago. Often a new invention depends on an older one. For example the invention of the television depended very much on the invention of the radio. The modern car is a perfect example of many inventions coming together. A car is built on an automated assembly line, the invention that made mass production possible. And modern cars have radios, CD players, air conditioning, and computer chips. Some cars even have DVD players and navigation systems.
