The boxes stood in neat rows at the foot of the stairs, more than thirty years worth of belongings wrapped in shock-proof bubbles and packed away in brown cardboard. She took one last walk through the old house, occasionally extending a hand to rub the polished oak of the second-floor banister or to touch the pointy stucco paint that she had always despised but now found strangely comforting. She knew that walking out the door would leave a hole in her heart that might never heal, but she also understood that there was no way she could continue to make payments on the house and still afford the care her father required. It was an ugly choice, and she was angry at the world for forcing her to make it. She stepped onto the front porch and pulled the door shut behind her. The tiny gust of air that the house emitted echoed the forlorn sigh that escaped from her lips.
