Alfred Stieglitz, an American photographer, is known not only for his striking black and white photographs but also for his insistence that photography is an art form. He was born in 1864 and died in 1946. Stieglitz believed that photography should be given the same respect and consideration as painting or sculpture. He said that photographs should look like photographs in order to distinguish them from other mediums. Stieglitz organized many revolutionary photographic exhibitions and founded several journals and periodicals that helped to further solidify photography's legitimacy. Stieglitz spent most of his life in New York, and his images captured the dramatic changes the city experienced in the early 20th century. His work and efforts established photography as one of the fine arts and inspired many other photographers and artists.
