The Whistle

Whenever Jason wanted to get someone's attention, he'd touch his thumb and forefinger together, put them to his mouth, and let out the loudest whistle you've ever heard. You could be a half-mile away, playing baseball or maybe just leaning over the bank of the creek watching the minnows milling in the current, and that shrill sound would start filling the air. No one else could whistle nearly as loud as Jason, so if we were that far away, we couldn't whistle back so that he could hear us. But that didn't stop Jason. He'd just keep on whistling and wait for a reply. One of us would whistle back as best we could and wait to see if Jason's next whistle sounded closer or farther away. One Christmas, Jason gave me a shiny metal whistle like coaches and referees use. Now, I can finally whistle back loud enough for Jason to hear.
