The National Collegiate Athletic Association, commonly called the NCAA, is the governing body for college athletics. The NCAA sanctions 22 collegiate sporting events, including basketball and football as well as the lesser-known sports of fencing and riflery. The association oversees all areas of competition for these 22 sports, such as managing championships, overseeing recruiting, and ensuring fairness and ethics in collegiate athletics. Over 1,000 colleges and universities make up the NCAA, which is divided into three separate divisions. Larger schools generally compete in Division One while smaller schools usually compete in Division Two or Three. Initially, the NCAA did not sanction any sports for women, but since 1982 the association has also sanctioned women's sports. Through its work, the NCAA ensures the continued fair play of college sports across the country.
