A marathon is a race on foot. The race is 26 miles long. The two most famous marathons in the United States are the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon. The Boston Marathon started in 1897. The New York City Marathon started in 1970. The idea of marathon races comes from the town of Marathon in Greece. There is a story about the town. The story may not be true. The story says that in 490 B.C. a runner from Marathon ran to Athens. It is 26 miles from Marathon to Athens. In 490 B.C., Greece was at war with Persia. Persia is called Iran today. The runner ran to Athens to tell people there about a battle. Marathon races started in 1896 at the Olympics. For years, the Olympic marathon was only for men. In 1984, the first women's marathon was held at the Olympics.
