Ideas about beauty vary from culture to culture and among different groups of people. The common saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," is true and means that the idea of what is beautiful changes from person to person. Beautiful people are often used as models for fashion shows or in advertising to try and convince people to buy certain products. People seeking beauty use make-up, exercise, and surgery to help gain the particular look they want. Another popular saying about beauty is, "it's what's inside that makes a person beautiful." This means that a person's inner character or personality can also make them beautiful or attractive to others. Sharing possessions, thinking of others, and helping those who have needs are some ways people can develop inner beauty. Many countries have beauty pageants where contestants compete for titles that name them as the most beautiful of the competition.
