The sport of downhill mountain bike racing isn't for riders who are afraid to crash. The combination of speed, rugged terrain, steep drop-offs, and constant twists and turns is a recipe for crashes. Even the best professional downhillers sometimes lose control. That's why they wear helmets, goggles, gloves, and an assortment of protective gear on their bodies. Elbow pads, shin pads, knee pads, hip pads, and padded chest and shoulder protectors are all standard equipment for downhill mountain bike racers. Thanks to the care they take to protect themselves, downhillers usually get back on their bike after a crash and keep on racing. Even all their padding can't protect them entirely, though. At the end of a downhill race, it's not unusual to see riders with an assortment of scratches, bruises, cuts, and sometimes even broken bones. The other thing you'll see is a big smile on just about every rider's face.
