Restaurant, shop, and store owners who want to see how customers are treated at their businesses sometimes hire mystery shoppers to evaluate their experiences. Also called secret shoppers or shadow shoppers, mystery shoppers are hired to visit businesses, pretending to be customers. They purchase food, items, or services, and then they write detailed reports that evaluate the business and its personnel. The reports include how quickly employees helped them and how courteously or discourteously customers were served or treated. They also report whether the transaction occurred smoothly and easily, or whether they encountered any problems. In this manner, business owners can know what happens when they are not on the premises. They can then make improvements, if necessary, to business and employee performances. In addition to receiving free food, free services, or free merchandise, mystery shoppers are paid for their time when they submit the evaluation reports to the business owners.
