Massage therapy has been around for nearly 3,000 years. A massage therapist helps to relieve pain and stiffness in the muscles and other soft tissue by rubbing the back, legs, arms, hands, and feet. Many cultures all over the world have documented the benefits of massage therapy for a variety of ailments including back pain, arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, fatigue, and the stress and tension that often lead to illness. Massage therapy is also proven to help improve circulation and boost the immune system. Today, doctors often recommend massage therapy for their patients, and some insurance plans cover the costs. There are more than 200 different kinds of massage therapy, including therapies specifically designed for children, athletes, and pregnant women, as well as for those with chronic illnesses. No longer seen as an alternative therapy, today 71 percent of hospitals offer massage therapy for patients.
