Long ago, people didn't have science to explain why things happen. They didn't know how the planets moved. They didn't understand why seasons change. The sun, moon, and stars were all mysteries. Ancient Greeks used myths to explain these mysteries. A myth is a story. Greek myths developed over many years. At first, they were told person to person. In the 8th century B.C., people wrote them down. Greek myths were about gods, goddesses, and heroes. These characters had supernatural powers. They controlled things on Earth. For example, Zeus was the sky god. He influenced the weather. He threw thunderbolts when he was unhappy. Poseidon was the sea god. He caused earthquakes when he was angry. Demeter was the harvest god. When Demeter wasn't with her daughter, she didn't let any crops grow. Ancient Greeks believed the myths were true. They worked hard to keep the gods and goddesses happy.
