Like TVs and cell phones, sneakers were invented. Around 1892, the U.S. Rubber Company came up with a new shoe. The shoes were called Keds. Unlike other shoes, Keds had a rubber sole. They had a canvas top. They were very comfortable. Keds were revolutionary. The new shoe was so quiet when worn, a person could sneak up on a friend. Keds got the nickname "sneakers." With the help of the Industrial Revolution, Keds got on the assembly line in 1917. For the first time, sneakers were being massed produced. Before assembly lines, shoes had to be made one at a time by hand. Keds' popularity inspired others. Marquis Converse designed a sneaker for basketball players. They were called Converse All-Stars. In 1924, a German named Adi Dassler created a sneaker called Adidas. His sneakers became world famous. Adi's brother started a sneaker company too. He called his sneakers Pumas. Thanks to Keds, the sneaker industry took off.
