On a very basic level, actors memorize lines and deliver them to a camera or audience at the appropriate time. However, those truly gifted in the craft of acting possess a thorough command of a broad emotional palette. It is with this palette that they can paint credible portrayals. Great actors don't just speak the lines of characters in given situations. Rather, they devote their entire beings to living characters' experiences. Actors involved in troubling scenes where characters are exposed to significant trauma or hardship may require several minutes or even hours to recover from traveling deep into their emotional stores. This ability to achieve complete empathy and understanding of characters is accomplished through training. The actor explores personal experiences to create emotional catalogues. It is from these catalogues that the masters of screen and stage find the ability to act out the dramas that entertain, educate, and enlighten us.
