Composting means making soil from decayed leaves, grass, and kitchen scraps. Composting is a great way to cut down on the amount of trash that goes to the dump. And adding the soil produced from composting to your garden can help grow healthier plants. You need four things to make a compost pile. Those things are air, water, brown material, and green material. Begin by adding a layer of brown material, such as leaves or pine needles. Next, add green material, such as grass clippings. Water each layer as you go, and mix up everything a little. Next, sprinkle in a layer of soil. Soil contains microorganisms, which are tiny creatures you need a microscope to see. The microorganisms will eat the materials in your pile and break it down into dark, rich soil. You can put vegetable scraps from the kitchen into the pile, but don't add meat. Meat will attract animals looking for a tasty snack! Don't put diseased plants into the pile. The diseases could spread into your garden when you use the compost. You can recycle a lot of garbage by making a compost pile.
