New York's Central Park is considered one of the great successes of modern urban planning. The 843 acre green space is in the center of Manhattan island. The trees, rocks, and streams look natural. But the entire park is landscaped. Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux designed the park in the 1850s. The forward-thinking designers knew that the bustling port city was likely to balloon in size. People would need a place for fresh air. The leafy park stretches from 59th Street in the south to 110th street in the north. Each day, thousands of visitors enjoy the park. Joggers enjoy the six mile path around the perimeter. Tourists ride in the horse and buggies that wait for fairs at the park entrances. Central Park is one of the most cherished parts of New York City. In 2004, over 32,000 volunteers helped restore paths and landmarks throughout the legendary green space.
