His golden paintings like "The Kiss" (c.1907) adorn many greeting cards. Noted for capturing the intense feeling of passionate love in his subjects, Gustav Klimt's paintings have become some of today's most expensive paintings. Klimt was born in Baumgarten, Austria in 1862, the second of seven children of poverty-stricken parents Ernst and Anna Klimt. Klimt was trained to be an architectural decorator, but his heart was set on the art world. Klimt is noted for his use of gold-colored decorations in his painting, and the women in these portraits have a ghostly look about them. His most famous paintings are "The Kiss" (1907-1908), "Judith I" (1901), and "Danae" (1907). Klimt's unusual style was influenced by many other art movements and artists such as medieval European painting, Japanese Ukiyo-e, Egyptian, Minoan, Classical Greek, and Byzantine art. Klimt joined other new artists of his time to form a group called the "Vienna Secession." He died of a stroke in Vienna, Austria in 1918.
