Do you enjoy thunderstorms? They are very exciting. They are also very common. About 1,800 thunderstorms are happening around the world at any time. Some people think they are scary. This is mostly because they are loud and bright. But you don't have to be afraid of them. If you are inside, you will be safe. Thunderstorms often happen in the late afternoon. They last about 30 minutes. Thunderstorms are loud because of thunder. Thunder is the sound that lightning makes. Thunderstorms are bright because of lightning. Lightning is a big charge of electricity. It travels from one cloud to another. It can also travel to the ground. Lightning and thunder actually happen at the same time. You hear thunder after you see the lightning. This is because light travels faster than sound. The longer the time between lightning and thunder, the farther away the storm. Stay safe and enjoy the excitement!
