A cheetah does not look like a pet cat. But it is part of the "cat" family. "Cheetah" is a Hindi word. It means "speckled." The cheetah is a large, thin cat. It has black spots all over its body. But there are no spots on its belly. Its fur is tan. It is the fastest animal on land. It can run as fast as 70 miles per hour! The cheetah has claws that retract. The claws help it grip when it runs. Cheetahs stay in groups. The groups are usually brothers. A group of cheetahs is called a coalition. Cheetahs can also "talk" with each other. A mother makes a noise called yipping. This is how she calls her cubs. Cheetahs also purr like a pet cat. This means they are happy. Cheetahs are carnivores. They hunt gazelles and antelopes. Most cheetahs live in Africa. They live in grasslands and in the mountains.
