Dolphins are not fish. They are actually mammals. But they live in the water. Scientists believe they evolved from an animal that walked on land millions of years ago. The word "dolphin" is from the Greek word delphos. It means "fish with a womb." Dolphins travel in groups. A group of dolphins is called a pod. They remain together if one dolphin is hurt. They are related to whales and porpoises. Dolphins are very intelligent. They are also very playful. They like to leap above the water. Some scientists think they do it for fun. Some think that it is a way to communicate. Dolphins like to ride waves, too. Some dolphins eat fish and squid. Others eat crustaceans. Ancient Greek sailors thought dolphins were good luck. It was good to see them near your boat.
