On July 5, 1996, a scientific breakthrough occurred at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. A sheep named Dolly was born as a result of cloning a cell from another adult sheep. The birth caused a lot of debate regarding whether or not cloning animals was ethical. Dolly lived a fairly normal life, although it was short. She gave birth to four lambs. In 2003, at age 6, Dolly died after developing lung disease. Many sheep develop the same kind of lung disease Dolly had, but the life expectancy of most sheep is 11 or 12 years. Scientists are now researching whether cloning could be linked to premature aging. The findings could affect other scientific technologies of the future. Today, Dolly's stuffed remains are on exhibit at Edinburgh's Royal Museum, part of the National Museums of Scotland.
