More than 26 million Americans suffer from hay fever. It has nothing to do with hay, and you don't run a fever either. Instead, you have itchy eyes, ears, and throat, and you might find yourself sneezing repeatedly and always having to blow your nose. Hay fever is a broad term for people who are allergic to pollen. Every year, as grasses, flowers, and trees bloom and grow, pollen are released. Some people have a sensitivity to these pollens, and their bodies produce a substance called "histamine" to fight back. The histamine causes itching and a runny and stuffy nose, which makes a lot of people miserable. There are several ways to control hay fever. Doctors recommend running the air conditioning instead of opening the windows so pollen can't get indoors. Medicines called "antihistamines" are also available to give relief from hay fever symptoms.
