A bruise is a kind of injury that is caused when part of the body hits something. The impact causes capillaries under our skin to be damaged. This causes blood to get into the surrounding tissue. Bruises often hurt later. They are usually not dangerous. A bruise can be seen a day or two after the impact. It is usually blue or purple in color. Then, it turns yellow and slowly goes away. The changing colors come from hemoglobin. Hemoglobin contains red blood cells. It also contains bilirubin and biliverdin. Bilirubin is yellow. Biliverdin is green. These two things combine, then breakdown, to make the different colors of the bruise. It takes between one and two weeks for a bruise to heal completely.
