The Washington Monument is in Washington, D.C. It is named after George Washington. George Washington was the first president of the United States. The Washington Monument is a tall building. It is shaped kind of like an arrow. It comes to a point at the top. The Washington Monument is over 555 feet tall. In 1888, the monument was opened to the public. An elevator takes people all the way to the top. The monument was worked on for a long time. It took over 100 years to completely finish it. Money was too tight to work on it at times. Each state contributed stones to build the Washington Monument. George Washington died in 1799. After he died, there were many plans for a monument to honor him. In 1848, the plans for the current monument were made. The Washington Monument was finished in 1884. The Washington Monument is one of the most famous landmarks in America.
