It is built to honor the deceased person. The building of the Taj Mahal started in 1622. It took 22 years to finish. The Taj Mahal was started by Emperor Shah Jahan. He built the Taj Mahal after his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died. Shah Jahan was emperor of the Mughal Empire. The Mughal Empire lasted from 1526 to 1857. The empire was centered in India and Persia. Persia is known as Iran today. The Taj Mahal is located on the Yamuna River in India. The Taj Mahal has a domed roof. A domed roof is like a half circle. The roof is 80 feet high. There are beautiful gardens around the Taj Mahal. Much of the Taj Mahal is made of marble. Marble is an expensive type of rock. It took 20,000 men working for over twenty years to finish the Taj Mahal.
