Rembrandt was a great Dutch painter. He worked in the seventeenth century. He produced art during the Dutch Golden Age. This was when the political, scientific, and cultural powers of the Dutch people were at their peak. By his early twenties he had opened a studio, where he accepted students. He painted over 600 oil paintings. He also produced drawings and etchings. He is known for his use of light and dark. His paintings have a dramatic reality that was unique for the time. Instead of painting stiff, formal compositions, he painted active scenes. The subjects of his works ranged from religious and mythological figures to historical scenes and portraits. He also depicted scenes from the everyday life of his time. He painted the rich and the poor, the young and the old. He also painted many self-portraits over the years. Today his paintings hang in art museums around the world.
