You can live for weeks without food, but for only a few days without water. Next to oxygen, water is the element most needed for life. More than 60 percent of your body weight is water. Water flushes waste, carries nutrients to your organs and cells, and helps keep your temperature stable. You get water from foods as well as liquids. Many fruits and vegetables are made mostly of water. The amount of water you need depends on how active you are, the temperature, and your health. You need more water when it's hot. You should drink water both before and after you play sports or exercise. If you are running a fever, you should drink water. When you don't drink enough water, you can become dehydrated. Drinking water is a simple way to help take care of your body.
