The Internet has provided an ease and efficiency of communication that few could have imagined only a generation ago. However, just as the Internet makes it easier for friends, family members, and business associates to stay connected, it also makes it easier for those with malicious intentions to ply their trade. Thieves and con artists can canvas for prospective targets thousands at a time, looking for the gullible fish to hook. Internet cons share the basic elements of more traditional scams. They offer the promise of fantastic gains for very little expenditure of energy. They hinge on establishing the victim's trust. And they move toward the primary goal of separating the victim from his or her money. If you receive an unsolicited email informing you that you can get rich stuffing envelopes at home or by agreeing to assist in removing the fortune of a recently deceased general from his native country, beware. Put your defenses up, hold onto your wallet, and move the cursor to the delete button.
