Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is between Earth and Jupiter. The ancient Romans could see Mars. It looked reddish orange to them. This color reminded the ancient Romans of blood, so they named the planet for their war god, Mars. The color of the planet comes from the large amount of iron in its soil. Mars is about 4.6 billion years old. Many untrue stories are told about Mars. The most common one involved creatures called Martians that were little and green. Maybe because Mars has some features that are like Earth's, people liked to think of someone living on Mars. It has clouds around it and ice on its north pole. However, unlike Earth, Mars has no water. The United States has landed two mobile robots or rovers on Mars. These machines explore and send back data. Still, it is a dusty planet that is full of much mystery.
