Imagine having a tongue longer than your body, or imagine tasting food with your feet. That's exactly what butterflies do! They use their long tongues to reach the tasty nectar and pollen hidden deep in flowers. That's why you see butterflies in the spring. When the flowers bloom, so do the butterflies. Each butterfly grows through a life cycle that takes a few weeks to complete. The life cycle is egg, larva, pupa, and butterfly. A butterfly has a short life. After butterflies emerge from their chrysalis, they only live for about 2 to 14 days. One spring day you might see a butterfly flying near a garden of flowers. Make sure you do not touch the butterfly's wings because this hurts the butterfly. The dust that comes off a butterfly's wings is made of tiny scales that help the butterfly to fly.
