Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in children today. Children with asthma suffer when their bronchial airways become inflamed. The inflammation causes swelling, muscle contractions, and increased mucous production. Breathing becomes more difficult when this occurs. Other symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. If the symptoms are severe, children may even be short of breath or have low levels of oxygen in their blood. Asthma can be caused by allergies, viral infections, or irritants in the air. Sometimes people have asthma without even knowing it. One common indicator is frequent coughing. Children who need to cough after physical activity or who cough a lot at night should see their doctors. It is possible that they have asthma. Even though asthma cannot be cured, it can almost always be controlled with treatment.
