One of the main components of poker is randomness. No one disputes this. The unschooled point to randomness is to attempt to reduce poker to a mere table game, placing it in the same category as roulette or craps. However, those who understand poker know that randomness is but one layer of a skill-based game, and it is the layer of randomness that makes poker such a satisfying model of life. In the real world, skill and abilities are invaluable, but hard work and talent are sometimes trumped by fortune, as when an employer's relative is hired over a more qualified candidate. Computers can be programmed to excel at games of absolute knowledge, such as chess, but no programmer has been able to master the art of partial-knowledge competitions where seasoned players can consistently beat even the best robots. To master randomness is not easy, but it is key to mastering poker, if not life itself.
