Coal is a natural resource found in the United States. Coal is a source of electricity for many in the United States. In fact, 46 percent of generators in our country are powered by coal. The bad news is that mining coal can be very dangerous. Mines are located deep under the earth. The roofs of the mines can cave in and cause injuries to miners. Flammable gases can cause explosions and unhealthy breathing conditions for miners. If a miner doesn't suffer a serious injury, he may develop health problems later. Inhaling coal dust over a long period of time can cause Black Lung Disease. Mining coal can also be dangerous to the environment, especially when coal and rock waste are dumped without considering the effects. Stricter mining laws have helped reduce this damage and new efforts are being made to keep miners safe.
