It's amazing to think that clay pots can actually help us learn about ancient civilizations. One of the oldest civilizations in the world was called Minoa. It flourished between 2500 B.C. and 1500 B.C. The Minoan civilization was located on the Isle of Crete in ancient Greece. The Minoans began making pottery to hold the abundance of food they were growing, especially different kinds of grain. The pots allowed the Minoans to store their food for future use. Some archeologists speculate that the Minoans learned how to "fire" clay pots by accident. It's possible a pot got burned in fire, and the Minoans realized how strong the pot became and that it could be placed in the fire again and again without any damage. The Minoans then began to use their pottery for cooking as well as storage. Today, Minoan pottery is collected by people who admire the pottery's special designs and patterns. Many of the designs are inspired by nature.
